O'Leary speaks out!!!

Picture_068 Last night I spoke with Dragon superstar Kevin O'Leary.

We discussed his new show on the Discovery network, Season Two's upcoming launch (Oct 1st) and of course the Gemini nomination for Season One of Dragons Den.

On hearing that the Den was up against "Next Top Model" and "Top Chef" the fiery Dragon said:

You can't buy food or sex without money, that’s why money always wins and in the end is the only thing that really matters. Now give us the Gemini!

DD nominated for Gemini

Congrats to Stu and the entire crew from Season One.  Dragons Den has just been nominated for a Gemni for: Best Reality Show.  The award will be handed down on Oct 16th (15 days after season 2 begins) and the nominees include:

5 Seekers
p. Joan Jenkinson, Ralph Benmergui, Allan Novak
(Seekers Television Inc.)

Canada's Next Top Model - Season 1
p. Sheila Hockin, David Fortier, Ivan Schneeberg
(Temple Street Productions)

Design Interns
p. Maria Pimentel, Joseph Blasioli
(Design Interns Productions Inc.)

Dragons' Den
p. Stuart Coxe, Mike Downie, Tracie Tighe
(CBC)

The Next Great Chef - Season 2
p. Edi Osghian, Giuliana Bertuzzi, Nick Versteeg
(Next Entertainment Inc

When asked for comment, DD Exec Producer Stuart Coxe was unavailable (understandable since he is busy on his next project, bringing back FRONT PAGE CHALLENGE) so we instead went to on-set insider Stella Bigglesworth who had this to say:

"It is between us and the Next Top Models, and hear me now Canada, we will kill those skinny skanks".

Dragons Den Season Two - the review

Rumor has it that I may get to see the first rough cut of an episode for Season Two this week and I am actually viscerally excited to see it.

Even though you work on the entire show, and are present for tapings, there is nothing like seeing the final product, even a rough cut, to get you stoked.

Stay Tuned!!

Dragons' Den around the World

Now, like everyone else I watch clips on Youtube.  And like all TV shows, Dragons' Den, does get considerable coverage (although I doubt any of it is authorized) on YouTube.  One of the advantages is of course, that it allows you to compare and contrast the Canadian Den with those from oversees.  Here see for yourself:

September a Go/Go

After a quiet summer, the fall is revving up strong with great entrepreneurial events going down on both Sean_dragons_densides of the border:

  1. Office 2.0 goes Sept 5-7 down in San Fran and covers all the latest webtech for enterprises big and small;
  2. Montreal hosts Red Herring Canada at the same time;
  3. the Banff Venture Forum is hosting a bootcamp in Calgary on Sept 12th for those in Alberta looking to raise funding;
  4. the week after in the North West Territories sees Prospects North hosting a Dragons' Den event; and
  5. the month rounds out with FI:RE in Dryden Ontario going Sept 26/27.

All will be featuring my new book Wise Words: Lessons in Entrepreneurship & Venture Capital, so be sure swing by and say hi.

Where are they now? - Gelfast

P6thumb One of the superstars from the first season of Dragons' Den was Gelfast.  With there no nonsense attitude, A++ management team, and thriving business, the Brothers Shoham managed to ignite a bidding war, which ended with Robert leading the deal.

Now one year later the firm, Medonyx, maker of Gelfast, is booming! CEO Gilad Shoham (still one of my favorite contestants to date) reports:

This year Medonyx is on track for breaking $1.5 M in revenue without hugely increasing our operating costs. We have several new really innovative products nearing market intro, and are generally doubling our revenue every 5 or so months. We are working some larger deals now to fuel growth acceleration in '08. Being on DD certainly was a pivotal event in our history, helping to get us where we are now and where we're going.  Still the best show on TV!!

Good luck to Gil and his team.

Stay tuned to CBC on Oct 1st for the premiere of Season Two.

How do you know if you idea sucks?

41bfx2bi0znl__bo2204203200_pisitb_2Lots of people have great ideas? Some will go on to be Big Dogs of industry. Most will go on to become fire hydrants.  So how do you objectively tell which is which?

That's a key theme in David Silver's new book on entrepreneurship, entitled Smart Start-Ups. It is also the  focus this month of my column in the globe. Read my interviw David and learn how this 20 years veteran Angel Investor determins which opportunities to pursue.
